A huge thanks to the Ancient and Honourable Order of the Golden Dawn in ireland, for their tireless effort in bringing these original designs back into the light.Spiralkinghttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11975774328861886630noreply@blogger.comBlogger5125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-938494741079844500.post-32754276630811277982015-10-22T15:16:00.003-07:002016-02-06T12:27:54.937-08:00Golden Dawn Sceptres, made in IrelandThere are several sceptres used in Golden Dawn ceremonies. I'll cover loads of basic processes in this post and hopefully give you an idea of pitfalls to avoid, or tricks for getting better results.

Tape?

The picture above shows a 22mm dowel about to be cut. The tape is there in the middle of the cut to stop the wood tearing off underneath as the saw breaks through. Sometimes the tear off doesn't matter as you'll have a pommel or head piece obscuring the damage - But, if you're making the kerux item, or wand etc, then you'll need tape - it helps keep it clean. Unless your wood is really cheap and then the tape will tear wood off also ;)

Sanding is a fairly simple process. Start with a rougher grit 60/80 and then move onto a 200 or 400 for finishing. If you skip this process, the priming/painting will look bad - some prime, some don't.

Next, to start on the head piece for the Hierophant (also the past Hierophant uses the same sceptre)
These points are made from 15mm square slip and a 70 degree cut to make the face of it. I had to make my own jig to cut these things. If you own a good mitre saw then you'll know how to cut this anyway.

Here's the pictures of my jig. It's rough, but got the job done. The square slip is held at 45 degrees fairly tightly. There are going to be errors as this is all done by hand - don't obsess too much as these items are not stared at too closely.

Ok, we have our fancy point now. We rotate the slip and cut the other end now (you can see a butress in the jig design - this is to deliberately give me the right length for the points when we rotate the slip around.
This mahogany is 45mm wide - this is too wide for what we need and we'll make use of the offcuts for another sceptre after this one. We are aiming for just over an inch for the edges.
You can see the excess here, we'll remove that now. (we need 4 of these - 2 for each hexagon)
Hexagon halves now glued, and then those are glued/clamped together. Don't worry too much about gaps. You can use filler, but we're going to carve this away shortly.
Now you can see the points forming up on the hexagons

We need to mark the drilling points next. We can just glue the points on - they will get knocked off if the sceptre accidentally falls down.

Next we drill the 22mm hole for the shaft and the holes for the screws. We start with smaller hole for the screw itself and THEN the the hole for the screw head to be recessed. Those larger ones don't go all the way down (hence the drills depth is limited here)

Next we mark out the rough area we are going to shave off (With a Dremel)

You can start to see some form to the hexagons now.

Then the next stage is marked out roughly - But more care now as we approach the final shape.

Here the final shape is done - It's not 100% accurate, but overall is fine!

Next we need to mark the centers. This tool helps, but you can make your own for the job if you need it.

Rotated and marked again - giving us the center.

Next we drill out the centers. Too much pressure will explode the ring (and yep - they go out in style) - If you think doing a thicker segment helps, it doesn't and can ignite cheap drills with the stress of going so deep. Here's a heavy vice for the drilling.

So we have the drill setup and ready to go. Goggles/gloves a must for this. Everything clamped and secure.

After that, we apply gold leaf, and you'll need some baby talc. The baby talc is rubbed over the sceptre shaft to slide these on easily. Don't forget to mark where the rings are going, and to put them BEFORE the head or pommel :)

The pommels are shown as a disk that is probably taken from the Masonic designs originally. The Golden Dawn versions contain sepherophic connotations. The 35mm dowel is cut to 26mm and drilled with the 22mm bit for the shaft.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Not only did I have to make the pillars, but also the Tetrahedrons and the bases for supporting them when uncovered in some grades.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The temple Praemonstrator guided every stage of the process so they came out perfectly. They were to be used in the Irish Golden Dawn Temple based in Dublin.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">We initially sketched out the specifications to get an idea of the wood, paint, and perspex needed.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I used about 10m of 19mm x 19mm pine, 8 sheets of 3.2mm mdf, and 2 sheets (12" by 8") of translucent perspex.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The base is just over 40cm wide/deep. The total height of the pillars goes over 2m.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This was the point that I knew I'd need power tools. There was no way I was going to be able to cut each pillar side anywhere near accurately or quickly. It was at that point I discovered how useful the mask was when I made the first cuts.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">After masses of research I eventually bought a smaller Makita circular saw for the job. I'd thought about cheaper tools; but since seeing a drill go up in smoke I'd decided to get the best tools I could afford.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I started by assembling the base frames, and screwing/nailing those to increase stability.
You'll need to score the plastic deeply many times and right to the edges (or you'll get lumps on the edges near the points). <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I mistakenly thought that this would be a easy task - How hard can a triangle be right? I obtained some 19mm x 19mm lengths for the Triangles and 12mm x 12mm for the crosses. Had a basic wood saw, small workbench and some awesome glue.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Initially i'd made cuts at 60 degrees and this was nearly impossible to get accurate. At this point I was making the cuts manually and using a standard protractor to measure angles - 60 degree cuts are hard.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The triangles i'd assembled that way were all slightly out and sub-standard, so went away and thought for a bit and It came to me that I could use a 30° angle on the inside edge - The 30° would also be easier to manually cut/sand.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The end results were much more consistent, but a lot of waste was happening due to cuts being slightly out. I'd come to the conclusion I needed tools (and I've literally just picked all this up to do!) So, don't even know the names of what I'm looking for at this point. Saved by the internet, I need a mitre saw.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Painting these was the next challenge. I had to learn rapidly how to - wood was a new medium for me.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">I used white primer starting with thin layers (Triangles have to be painted in sections) and soon discovered that it was really hard to get smooth finish. Looking back I should have sanded the wood more - a LOT more. Start with rough grade (80 or so) and then work your way up to 200-400 - This will give the wood a nice smooth finish. You'll need the mask at least when sanding that primer - a very fine dust is released.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">After apply what seemed to be 90 coats of primer and sanding each layer down to get the perfect flat finish I gave up - Always getting lines and imperfections... So, I stumbled on a great trick... I used a nice large tube of titanium white acrylic, wet my triangle, wet my finger, squirted a healthy amount of paint on and smeared it with my very wet finger (a trick I learned a while back as an artist) - the result was a much better flat finish. In future I'll use wood filler for the small gaps in some of the joins - Cutting the wood can sometimes cause chips in the edges (Keep in mind that all this is being done with a small budget, and am very new to all this (am sure there are many tricks yet to learn)
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The crosses were much easier and forgiving than the triangles, and used acrylics also. Using 12mm strips of wood meant that the height was 48mm / width 36mm.

Before you set out and get building the tools you'll need for ceremonial magic, you'll need some simple items for protection, a willingness to read the manuals for your tools (if using power tools, this is a must!), and a lot of common sense.

Do

Get goggles, gloves suited to the work you are going to undertake and USE THEM all the time.

Make sure that you sweep your workplace often (the dust makes the floor very slippery)

Check that you are wide awake and focused before using any tool

Focus on job in hand, Do not let your mind wander while cutting/drilling etc...

Use common sense and take a few moments to look at possible problems you may run into

Read the manuals, research risks for the jobs you are doing

Don't

Use tools without knowing what they do

leave shavings/dust around

Get over confident and do jobs without protection

I'll discuss specific safety issues as they arise for each piece also. There are many accidents that can happen, most can be avoided with common sense.
